When One Decision Changes Your Life
Risk, career change, fear, uncertainty, fulfillment, courage, reinvention, international work, and personal growth come together in this new episode of the Author X Talks.
One of the biggest things I talk about with authors is the difference between knowing what you want and actually having the conviction to move toward it.
This story captures that perfectly.
Joshua Mindel had a technical career in Washington, D.C. He knew he wanted something different. He wanted international work, more meaning, and a life that felt bigger than the one he was currently living.
Then an opportunity came.
Liberia.
In the middle of a civil war.
His first answer was no.
And honestly, that made complete sense.
But what happened next became a much bigger lesson about fear, career risk, uncertainty, and the stories we tell ourselves when we are standing at the edge of something new.
Sometimes the thing stopping us is not the obvious danger.
Sometimes it is the fear that if we make one wrong move, everything we have built will disappear.
I love the way he describes that as the “Chutes and Ladders fear.”
We convince ourselves that one decision could send us all the way back to zero.
But life usually does not work that way.
And uncertainty does not only swing toward something worse.
It can swing toward opportunity.
Growth.
People you never would have met.
Work you never would have imagined doing.
And a version of yourself you may never have discovered otherwise.
That is one of the reasons we created Author X Brand Camp.
Yes, we talk about books, brands, content, websites, speaking, and building an audience.
But underneath all of that is a bigger question:
What are you actually trying to build with your life and your work?
Because clarity matters.
But eventually, clarity has to become conviction.
