Treat People Like Robots, and You Get Robot Effort
I walked out on my lunch break and never went back.
Then I did it again at the next job.
I wasn't a perfect employee back then, but I had terrible management. It was a big-box store, my ideas didn't matter, and I felt stuck doing a robot job.
People call those "low-level jobs." That phrase is terrible. Those workers keep the whole system running, and they're usually paid and treated like the bare minimum.
So I started hand-painting t-shirts and selling them on eBay. I made more doing that than I did at the store. That's when I decided to become the kind of leader I always wanted to work for.
My friend and client Patrick Manigault named exactly what I felt back then: when people don't feel seen, heard, or valued, they disengage. Treat people like robots and you get robot effort.
