How to Use Pauses to Connect with Your Audience as an Author-Turned-Speaker.
I picked up a speaking technique in my early days that I love!
It's crucial for authors-turned-speakers: the power of the deliberate pause.
Hold it for 1, 2, maybe even 3 seconds.
As an author, you know the weight of words, but in speaking, those 3 silent seconds can speak volumes. To the audience, it's a magnetic pull.
Begin your reading or talk with a pause.
Let them anticipate the world you're about to paint.
Insert pauses between chapters or pivotal plot points to allow reflection.
After sharing a profound quote from your book? Pause.
Let it resonate.
Teasing a revelation or twist?
A pause right before can be pure magic.
Answering a fan's question?
A pause shows you're giving it thought, even if you've answered it a thousand times.
Sharing your inspiration or the story behind your book?
Pause before the big reveal.
And when you conclude, let a pause be the period at the end of your sentence.
Use this tool judiciously. While it’s a powerful technique, it's all about striking the right balance.
Remember, as an author, you're a master of pacing in writing. Apply that same mastery to speaking.
